Two Deaths Animals will Never Face —
What are they?
Did you know the Bible talks about three different kinds of death?
If you answered no, you’re not alone. Most people have no idea that the Bible references three deaths, let alone tell you what they are.
So, what are these three deaths and what do they have to do with animals?
The first death talked about in the Bible is Spiritual Death –
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,
“Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat,
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
you shall not eat,
for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Genesis 2:16-17 MEV
On the very day that Adam ate the fruit, God kept His word and Adam died spiritually. Now that doesn’t mean his spirit was annihilated or ceased to exist — spirits never die, spirits are eternal.
The biblical meaning is that Adam’s spirit was instantly disconnected from the source of all life — God!
Spiritual Death means that fellowship between man and God has been broken.
So, what impact does Spiritual Death have on creation?
The very moment Adam disobeyed the Lord in the Garden, sin entered the world — called the fall of man. As a result of this single act of high treason, utter devastation came upon all of creation.
Let’s begin with the following important point.
Take heed, the ramifications of inheriting Adam’s sin have eternal consequences for every human being ever to be born.
The consequence of Adam’s sin has a far greater impact on mankind than it does on the rest of creation. I say that because at the time of conception, every human being not only inherits Adam’s bloodline, but also inherits the original sin and sin nature.
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.” Psalm 51:5
In other words, we are ALL born sinners! We are all born spiritually dead and separated from God!
There is only one exception — Jesus Christ!
So, what caused Spiritual Death?
SIN
Spiritual Death was the first death to come upon humanity.
Having said that, let me emphasize that Spiritual Death is one of the three deaths that no animal will ever face!
Why do I say that?
Adam’s sin cannot bring Spiritual Death to any animal simply because animals do not and can not inherit man’s sin nature.
Remember, animals do not carry Adam’s bloodline so there can be no sin or sin nature passed through any animal’s bloodline.
Unlike man, animals are not born dead in sin but rather, they are born spiritually alive. And because animals remain sinless, their relationship with God has never been broken.
That’s the reason why animals do not need to be born again in order to spend eternity with their Creator, Almighty God.
On the other hand, to be *born again is the only way for man to be saved from the consequence of his sin and put back into right relationship with God.
To be sure, being born again is the only way for man to spend eternity with loved ones, the animals and most importantly — God Almighty! (see John 3:3)
Adam’s sin infected mankind — not the animals!
What is the Second kind of Death?
The second kind of death is physical death – this takes place when the spirit and soul departs from the body. Physical death is obvious to us all because we can see and experience it with our eyes — it’s tangible.
James 2:26 says; “…the body without the spirit is dead.”
So, what causes physical death?
Adam’s single act of rebellion not only brought sin into the world but it also caused a curse to come upon the ground. That’s important to understand because there is a direct correlation between man’s sin and the land.
“…cursed is the ground because of you…” (Genesis 3:17-19)
What makes the curse that was placed on the ground so significant?
It’s important to grasp what happened when the ground was placed under the curse because it was the curse that brought about the process of death and decay to our bodies.
Every material thing on the earth, including our bodies and the animals bodies, is derived from the ground and therefore subject to the effects of the curse. This is the reason why ALL bodies will ultimately die and decay — they are made out of elements from the ground that carry a curse. A curse that one day will be no more.
Make sense?
The Bible tells us that the bodies of both man and animals are made from the ground!
Genesis 2:7, Ecclesiastes 3:20
Physical Death
is the one and only
death that animals will ever face
There will come a time in every animal’s life when their spirit and soul will depart from their body and return back to God — and then their bodies will return to dust.
Then the dust will return to the earth as it was,
And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
(Ecclesiastes 12:7)
Every man’s body and every animal’s body will one day die, simply because they are all made from the ground — ground that is still under the curse. (see Genesis 3:17-19)
NOTE: It’s essential for us to understand that both man and animals merely live in (or occupy) their bodies. We are in actual fact, all eternal spirit beings that have a soul and we live in our body while here on earth.
Even though every animal will experience Physical Death, there is coming a time when every animal will also experience the resurrection of their body and ultimately return to the New Earth. (see Romans 8:20-23)
I’ll cover this in a future blog –
Why does the Bible call the third type of death Eternal Death?
Eternal death is different from both spiritual death and physical death because eternal death is everlasting.
It is an unending separation from God, our pets and everyone else who rejects Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Eternal death is the ultimate form of separation!
The Bible also refers to the Eternal Death as the Second Death.
(Not to be confused with the second kind of death referred to above as physical death.)
When a spiritually dead person (someone who has not been born again) dies physically, they enter eternity separated from God — this is called the Second Death. Once someone enters the second death, it is irreversible and there is no future hope for them.
What the Bible call the “second death” is eternal, and in the lake of fire!
“But the cowardly, the unbelieving the abominable,
the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers,
the idolaters, and all liars shall have their portion in
the lake which burns with fire and brimstone,
This is the second death.
Revelation 21:8
But no one has to experience the Second Death. The Bible tells us that the one who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. (Revelation 2:11)
God has given all of mankind, one way (and only one way) to overcome the second or eternal death — and the way is through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
We choose! No one has to end up in a place of eternal damnation, except by their own choice. Everyone who receives Jesus Christ as their person Lord and Savior will be able to overcome and will be saved from Eternal Second Death.
When Jesus speaks of he who overcomes in Revelation, Chapters 2 and 3, He’s referring to those who are trusting in His blood for their salvation. In other words, all born again believers will be saved from the Second Death!
It’s having faith in Jesus Christ that makes you an overcomer!
“…for whosoever is born of God overcometh the world:
and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith
1 John 5:4
Will animals ever face an Eternal or Second Death?
NO! It’s impossible!
The reason the Bible doesn’t talk about the Second Death for the animals is because they will never experience the Second Death.
They will never experience the Second Death simply because they never experienced the first death — which is the death that every human being is born into.
*Remember, you must be in a “spiritually dead” condition when you die in order to face the Eternal Death — in the Lake of Fire.
And because the spirit of an animal never dies and is never separated from God to begin with, there is no need for their spirit to be reconnected or born again.
Consequently, animals will only have to face one death, and that death is Physical — a temporary separation of their spirit and soul from their body.
In summary
Death in the Bible always refers to a type of separation —
Separation from our bodies or separation from Almighty God
The Bible never says there are ANIMALS IN HELL!
NO ONE CEASES TO EXIST!
Choose life — Choose Jesus Christ!
